Choosing the Right Printing Company

Most business owners will realize that not all printing projects can be completed using a desktop printer and will need a professional local printing company. A print service company offers the best option for professional and quality printed documents, but it is important to follow a few simple guidelines to choose the printing service company that best suits your needs.

Printing Expertise
Printing is more than simply running sheets of paper through a big copier. In fact, some print services specialize in specific types of printing. A print service that specializes in business cards may not offer book or calendar printing, and if they do, they may not offer high-quality products. Be sure to ask print service companies what types of products they offer and request samples of any work they have done in the past.

Printing Time Schedule
Frequently, businesses think that a print service can print any size project, no matter how complicated, in a short time. However, rushing a printing project often results in typographical or other types of errors. To avoid those, it’s best to involve the print service company from the beginning of the project rather than just before it is ready to be printed. A print professional can offer suggestions and advice to ensure your job meets your expectations and is of the highest quality.

Printing Price?
Print price is an important factor when it comes to choosing a print service, but it is also important to get the quality and service you need. A local printing company provides not only a printing service but consists of artistry and craftsmanship as well.

Magazine Printing Help Tips

When planning a magazine project, knowing all your options upfront helps you make better decisions and stay within your magazine budget.

1. Magazine Page Size
8 3/8” x 10 7/8” is the most economical and common magazine page size. Most press and bindery equipment is designed to produce this size efficiently and with minimum paper waste. Oversize and undersize magazines can be produced but their cost per square inch is almost always higher.

2. Magazine Quantity
Very short runs can be produced digitally. Medium run quantities are printed on sheet fed presses, while larger quantities are produced on our medium or large web fed presses.

3. Graphic Files
InDesign, Quark X Press, Photoshop and Illustrator are very commonly used software to prepare files for magazine printing production. Get a printer who is able to use these and any other standard graphic arts applications in Mac or Windows. Files converted to PDF are also common.

4. File review
The printer should use top file review technology. This is a state of the art portal system for uploading and previewing PDF files.

5. Magazine Proofs
Your files are ripped before proofing so the proof you’re seeing on your screen is the same proof the pressman sees on press. Your changes can be made directly through the system and viewed in real time. Hard copy proofs can be made at your request.

6. Magazine Paper
Your magazine printer should offer a wide selection of papers. Almost all of the “house” coated papers should be FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified. Experts should work with you to choose the best papers to meet your reproduction needs and mailing weight goals.

7. Magazine Bindery
Most magazines are glued, stapled or saddle stitched. High speed saddle stitches can also address and sort in line with the finished copies ready to mail immediately. There’s no time or money lost waiting in transporting to outside mail houses.

If cost is a factor in your magazine project, I recommend consulting with your printer early in the magazine creation process to discuss your plans, specifications, potential readers and budget. A few minutes spent with your printer at the beginning could possibly bring big savings.

Tips and Help Printing Banners and Signs

Determine the size of your banner;
Sign Banners Help Tips for Stuart FL
The best way to design with a specific format in mind is to establish the dimensions of your advertisement first. When printing on large formats, such as banners, it is especially important to start designing your ad with the exact measurements of the final product. Resizing later can distort your images and leave your ad looking unprofessional. Also, be sure to use the highest resolution possible for your images to maximize clarity.

Inside or Outside Banner
If your banner is to be used outside the banner may need to be water proof and extra strong material should be used with wind as a consideration. ALSO; how will you be hanging your banner? Proper fasteners and re-enforced grommets may be needed for outside banners. Always make sure your sign printer knows where the banner will displayed (inside or out) and how you want to fasten the banner.

Avoid gradients in the banner;
With large-scale prints, gradients can present a problem. “Banding” is the term used to describe the lines that appear across gradient images when they are printed in large formats. Banding can detract from an otherwise well-designed banner, so the best way to avoid it is to keep gradients out of your print. If you must use gradients, you can try to correct this issue by adding light blurring and noise to smooth out the lines. Also, keep in mind that the most noticeable banding can be seen in dark blue to light blue gradients.

Make the banner legible from a distance and easy to read;
Just because it’s printed on a large format doesn’t always mean it can be read from far away. Make sure your texts are printed large enough so that they can be seen from the distance they’re intended for. If it’s the focus of your banner, then it should be obvious to the viewer. The most important information should be printed larger than the rest, but you should also ensure that the less important text is also clear and readable.

Keep it simple and clean;
Banners offer a lot of space to use, but it’s usually better not to stuff it full of information. Sometimes a simple, striking message or image can say more to your audience than a paragraph could. Cluttered banners are also less eye-catching than a minimal, straightforward design. Just remember to include an identifier, such as a logo, company name, or website.

Tips For Using Graphics

When designing or working with a printer graphics shop please consider the following tips:

graphic design tips1) Graphics Resolution
Art files and photographs should be created at the highest resolution possible.

2) Text
Too much text is a turn-off. It’s a mistake to cram too much text and copy into a brochure or other type of printed piece.

3) White Space in Graphics
White space (around text and pictures) is almost always a good thing.

4) Pictures In Graphics
When incorporating pictures into graphics make sure the pictures are clear, clean and concise and in some cases pictures with people may help.

5) Graphic Page Density
Try not to crowd pages with multiple graphics. To many graphics on a page loose the effectiveness of the graphics.

6) Best Size Page Graphics
Readers should be able to view and read your graphics easily. Whether too small or too large, an incorrectly sized image can make your document look messy and may actually detract from its overall effectiveness. If an image is too small, readers may have to struggle to make it out. If the image is too large, it can distract readers from the text as well as increase the file size of the document. Remember, you want to include images that emphasize what you’re saying, not take away from it.

7) Graphics Impact and Message Delivery
graphic design help tips
Choose an image that stands out and grabs to reader’s attention. The image should generate a positive reaction and draw the reader into the piece. An impactful image captivates the reader and enhances reader engagement. Remember it is not about filling a space it about grabbing the readers attention and delivering the main message or theme.

8 Graphics Help When help is needed or questions arise contact your local graphics and print shop. Always ask if the print shop has a graphics professional on site. Many but not all local printing shops have graphic design people on premise.
